Patricia Belli

Managua, Nicaragua, 1964

Patricia Belli holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from the San Francisco Art Institute (2001). fellow of the Artists in Berlin 2022-23 Program and one of the winners of the CIFO Arts 2024 Grants and Commissions Program. In 2001 she founded the Espacio para la Investigación y Reflexión Artística, EspIRA, for the sensitive and critical formation of Central American artists, which she directed for 20 years. She has participated in multiple biennials, including EVA, Ireland (2018, curated by Inti Guerrero), Berlin Biennale (2018), FEMSA, Mexico (2020-21) and Carnegie International, United States (2022). Her work can be found in the collection of the Tate Gallery, London, the KADIST Foundation, San Francisco, the Ortiz Gurdián Foundation, Nicaragua, the Museo de Arte y Diseño Contemporáneo, Costa Rica, and the ArsTEOR/éTica Foundation, among others. Lives and works in Managua.

Instalación textil compuesta por recortes de telas provenientes de prendas de ropa usadas y texturizadas, tanto decorativas como funcionales, cortados en formas estrelladas y unidos mediante la técnica del patchwork [trabajo de parches], lo que dota a la obra de individualidades propias de las historias personales que cada prenda lleva consigo. Suspendida de tres esquinas y con una cuarta apoyada en el suelo, se presenta como una alfombra, símbolo de acceso. La pieza es bifacial: su anverso es liso y envolvente, mientras que el reverso, con costuras expuestas, transmite una crudeza vivencial. La obra evoca, al mismo tiempo, nutrición y refugio.

Textile installation composed of fabric cutouts sourced from used and textured garments, both decorative and functional, shaped like stars and joined using the patchwork technique, which imbues the work with a sense of individuality drawn from the personal stories carried by each garment. Suspended from three corners, with a fourth resting on the floor, it is presented as a carpet, a symbol of access. The piece is double-sided: its front is smooth and enveloping, while the back, with exposed seams, conveys the rawness of lived experience. The work simultaneously evokes nourishment and refuge.
