María José Arjona

Bogotá, Colombia, 1973

Her practice is linked to the experience of time as a determining action in the construction of socio-affective structures that go beyond the edge of the human to propose a unique form of poetic-political resistance. Rooted in the performance A long-time performer with a background in contemporary dance, Arjona questions concepts of identity, visibility and access. She won a DAAD scholarship in Berlin and participated in the research program at Tisch University at New York University. He has presented his work at institutions such as The Mystery School of Choreography, Princeton University, Feria Arco, the Performance Biennial of Argentina, the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires, Nos Envera. He has had group and solo exhibitions in Colombia, Spain and Argentina.

Este proyecto celebra el  agua como sustancia filosófica y matriz afectiva. El río activa una metodología que surge de la correspondencia y la implicación radical entre materia, afecto y ritmo. En diálogo con las cosmologías indígenas que ven el agua como el aliento planetario, un vector lunar, el río se abre a una dimensión cosmogónica, invitando a la contemplación de los sistemas relacionales que el agua activa tanto a escala terrestre como celeste. 

Esta obra reúne la investigación realizada por María José Arjona en los últimos años sobre el agua, el movimiento, los territorios y el sonido, desarrollada en diversos contextos geográficos y políticos, incluyendo varios ríos como el Magdalena, el Guaviare, el Palomino, el Amazonas y el Cauca en Colombia; el Hudson y el Miami en Estados Unidos; y el Spree en Berlín. Estas investigaciones convergen en un conjunto de obras que son fluidas tanto material como conceptualmente, lo que refleja el interés de la artista por las interdependencias entre los cuerpos, los entornos y las ecologías sonoras.

Commissioned for the 24th Paiz Art Biennial

This project celebrates water as a philosophical substance and affective matrix. The river activates a methodology that emerges from the correspondence and radical involvement between matter, affection, and rhythm. In dialogue with Indigenous cosmologies that view water as the planetary breath, a lunar vector, the river opens to a cosmogonic dimension, encouraging contemplation on the relational systems that water activates on both terrestrial and celestial scales. 

This work brings together María José Arjona’s research of recent years on water, movement, territories, and sound, developed across diverse geographical and political contexts, including various rivers like the Magdalena, Guaviare, Palomino, Amazonas, and Cauca rivers in Colombia, the Hudson and Miami rivers in the US, and the Spree river in Berlin. These investigations converge in a body of work that is both materially and conceptually fluid, reflecting the artist’s interest in the interdependencies between bodies, environments, and sonic ecologies.
